Summer Session 2017: June 26 – Aug. 18


CMS offers a variety of summer music and arts programs for all ages! The 2017 Summer Session runs from June 26th  through August 18th. In addition to our state-licensed arts day camp  Kate’s Camp for Kids, we also offer private lessons,  Broadway Bound Musical Theater Experience,  Flute Ensemble, and Beginning Groups for Piano and Guitar.

Classes may be delayed or canceled if sufficient enrollment is not reached. Summer registration is accepted for accounts in good standing (paid in full or enrolled in a payment plan).  A limited number of scholarships  are available in the summer on a first-come, first-served basis.

Private Lessons

Our 8-week summer session offers flexible scheduling with no minimum or maximum number of lessons required. Lesson time slots are filled on a first-come, first-served basis and payment is due at the time of registration. Private lessons are offered for most instruments during summer session; current students are not obligated to enroll in the summer session.

30-minute lessons = $38 per lesson
45-minute lessons = $56.50 per lesson
60-minute lessons = $75 per lesson

Senior citizen discount offered for students age 65+. There are NO REFUNDS and NO CREDITS for missed lessons and dates may not be rescheduled. *4-PACK Lessons must be scheduled for consecutive summer term weeks, at the same time each week, to receive the 4-PACK price.

Kate’s Camp for Kids

July 10 – August 11; Ages 5 to 10, $285 per session

This state-licensed camp brings together professional teaching artists with one of the area’s leading providers of arts education – Community Music School – at the Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center. Register here!


Broadway Bound Musical Theater Experience

Ages 8 to 15; $360 per two-week session

This two-week program is for boys and girls ages 8-15 and gives your child the opportunity to experience every aspect of staging a musical with onstage and backstage roles for everyone – singing, dancing, acting, creating sets, and assembling costumes – all in just 10 days! These shows are abridged, fully-licensed presentations and over the past 13 years, CMS productions have included “Disney’s The Little Mermaid, Jr.,” “Cats,” “Seussical, Jr.,” and “Annie Jr.” among others.

Summer Groups and Ensembles


Beginning Group Piano with Tom Briggs
Ages 7-12, for beginners
Monday-Thursday, July 10-13, 4:00-5:15pm, $125 (includes Alfred Beginning Group Piano Method book)

This course will introduce students to the fundamentals of basic music notation, finger technique, proper posture, counting and rhythms. Our fun, interactive approach uses our Yamaha 88 key digital pianos that feature 500 sounds. The last class is a group performance including a recap of the week. This is an excellent primer for the beginning piano student who may want to continue with private lessons.

CMS Drum Village with Marty Wirt

All ages, for beginners-no prior percussion experience necessary!

CMS Drum Village is an opportunity for all ages to participate in a hands-on percussion ensemble that explores musical traditions from around the world. Students will learn to coordinate intricate rhythmic patterns, build a sense of community, and [optional] participate in a semester-end performance.

A fun and challenging weekly ensemble experience that will help develop your sight-reading and listening skills, improve your intonation, and make you a better all-around flutist. Explore a variety of flute repertoire including folk, classical, TV/movie music, and jazz with a variety of quartets, trios and works for larger ensembles.

Summer Workshops


Drums & Percussion Workshop with Tom Briggs
Ages 10-17, all skill levels!

This workshop will emphasize drum set covering techniques and musical styles such as rock, jazz, and latin. Hand techniques on snare drum, two and four mallets on vibraphone and marimba, world percussion instruments, reading drum music, and group performance will be included. Also an audio/visual presentation that features many of the great drum set artists past and present.

Introduction to Music Technology with Tom Briggs
Ages 10-18, all skill levels!
Tuesday, August 1st, 9:30am-12:30pm, $50

An introduction and overview of our digital age that covers all you need to get started with music technology. Explained in simple terms, this one-day workshop will cover the basics of music software programs, songwriting, music production, midi files, and music on the Internet. The three main programs demoed are: Audacity (recording/sequencing) Garageband (recording/production), and Sibelius (recording/notation). The presentation will be on a state of the art Apple computer. Taught with an interactive focus with lots of questions and answers, as well as fun musical examples. Music Technology assists the musician or composer to make or perform music; to compose, notate, play back or record songs or pieces; or to analyze or edit music in the digital age.

Jazz for the Beginning Student with Tom Briggs
Ages 11-17, for advanced beginners and up (some note reading & technical abilities required)
Tuesday, July 18th OR Tuesday, August 15th, 9:30am-12:30pm, $50

Open to all instrumentalists (including strings), this ensemble/workshop will cover the basics of jazz performance including note reading, jazz rhythm, harmony, scales, patterns, and creative improvisation. Musical examples will be tailored to each student’s proficiency level. The instructor will accompany students on piano. Intended for students new to jazz with no prior experience in this genre.

The Science of Sound with Christine Coyle
Ages 7-10, all skill levels!
Thursday, August 10th, 1:30-4:00pm, $40 (includes materials and take home instrument)

We will have fun learning about the science of sound waves by doing  a variety of activities and experiments.   We play our instruments but do we know about sound waves?   How do we hear?  What is going on?  Let’s prove these waves even exist.  Tables are set up with one experiment on each table. To finish the class each student will make their own instrument to take home (Pan Flute)!

FOR AGES 2-5: Music Therapy Group for Young Children with Autism
Wednesdays, June 28, July 5, 12, 19, 26 &  August 2
Time: 10:15 – 11:00am
Tuition: $115
This group will consist of 6, 30-minute group sessions to target various skills including; communication, joint attention, gross/fine motor skills, socialization and other sensory-related needs.  The final 15 minutes of each session will be reserved for parent/guardian feedback and questions with the therapist.

FOR AGES 13-22: Music Therapy Social Skills Group for Adolescents & Young Adults with Autism
Wednesdays, June 28, July 5, 12, 19, 26, & August 2
Time: 5:30 – 6:30pm
Tuition: $150
This group will consist of 6, 45-minute group sessions for individuals ages 13-22 that have high-functioning autism.  The final 15 minutes of each session will be reserved for parent/guardian feedback and questions with the therapist.  Group endeavors will involve lyrical analysis, songwriting and improvisation activities designed to promote self-expression, creative/musical expression, communication of thoughts/ideas, group collaboration and peer support.

Friday, July 14 and/or Friday, August 11th
Time: 7:00 – 8:00pm
Tuition: $25/family
This family-oriented event will take place once per month for 60 minutes to promote socialization and creative/musical expression.  Individuals of all ages and abilities may participate.
